Improving Digital Menu Displays in Restaurants
A UX redesign concept to enhance readability and user flow on multi-screen digital displays in physical environments.
Observation
In many modern restaurants, multiple digital screens are used to display menus. A common implementation is to show a slideshow of menu items across all screens—rotating between, say, three slides of a menu on all three screens. Each screen cycles through the same slides at the same time.
While this may seem dynamic, it often results in poor readability and user frustration, as customers must wait for slides to rotate to view the full menu.
The UX Challenge
- Users are forced to wait through slide rotations to view all menu items.
- Important content may be missed or skipped due to timing.
- In crowded environments, this creates friction and stress.
- All screens showing the same thing at the same time is inefficient.
Proposed UX Solution
Utilize the full potential of multiple screens by treating them as static zones in a single layout, rather than duplicating rotating content.
- Assign each slide to a dedicated screen.
- Example:
- Slide 1 → Screen 1
- Slide 2 → Screen 2
- Slide 3 → Screen 3
- Keep this core content static for consistent visibility.
- Reserve a corner/section of each screen for dynamic rotating elements (like promos or new items).
